Legendary Valencia CF striker Waldo passes away at 84
Valencia CF are saddened to report that Waldo Machado da Silva, a legendary striker for the club, has died at the age of 84. The Brazilian was an exceptional goalscorer and a crowd favourite throughout the 1960s.
Born on September 1934 in Niteroi, Brazil, Waldo joined Valencia CF in 1961, going on to play 9 seasons with them. With Waldo in the side, Valencia CF won the Fairs Cup in 1961-62 and 1962-63, and the Copa del Rey in 1967.
His record of an incredible 157 goals from 294 official matches make him VCF's second top scorer of all time. The Brazilian was also the winner of the 'Pichichi' award in 1966-67, having scored 24 goals in a single LaLiga season.
He scored 115 goals in 215 LaLiga games, 13 from 29 in the Copa del Rey, 28 from 44 in the Fairs Cup and 1 from 6 in the European Cup Winners Cup, with an average of 1.8 goals per game. One such goal was Valencia CF's first ever in European competition.
